Twitter Contemplates Removing Engagement Metrics in Favor of Gestures, CEO Elon Musk Announces

In a recent post on Twitter, CEO Elon Musk hinted at a major overhaul in the platform’s user interface. The proposed change involves the removal of action buttons displaying interaction counts, including likes, reposts, bookmarks, and more. Instead, users will utilize gestures, such as double tapping, to engage with posts.

Musk justified this shift by emphasizing the importance of enhancing readability on the platform. While the proposed alteration has garnered attention, it has also sparked a spectrum of reactions. Some users are skeptical about the potential impact on engagement metrics, as easy access to these figures has been a crucial tool for marketers.

Previously, the company had introduced a mobile-friendly tweak, rounding off engagement counts to conserve characters. However, this adjustment will now be eliminated entirely from the timeline.

It remains uncertain whether Twitter will implement this design modification or offer users, particularly those with premium subscriptions, the option to choose their preferred display settings on their main timeline. Under Musk’s leadership, the company has undergone significant transformations, largely in pursuit of profitability, showing no signs of slowing down. The latest speculation points towards a potential shift to an entirely paid platform, signaling a departure from Twitter’s previous operational model.
