The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed allegations by United States lawmakers concerning the health and prison conditions of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive detained in Nigeria.
Gambaryan is currently held on charges of tax evasion and other financial crimes. In response to claims that his health is deteriorating and he lacks access to adequate medical care, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, issued a statement on Friday categorically denying these accusations.
“These allegations are false and should be ignored,” Idris declared. He assured that Gambaryan’s detention is lawful and conducted under court orders. “Gambaryan receives the necessary medical attention and benefits from consular services provided by his home government.”
Idris further emphasized that the Nigerian government remains committed to upholding Gambaryan’s fundamental rights. “The Federal Government will not jeopardize his right to a lawful trial and quality care, including healthcare, during his detention,” he said.
He reiterated that the court is the only authority that can alter the terms of Gambaryan’s detention or order his release. Additionally, Idris highlighted that Nigeria’s actions against Binance and its executive align with international norms and the sovereign responsibilities practiced by other nations.
The minister’s statement directly counters U.S. lawmakers’ concerns, affirming that Gambaryan is being held under conditions that respect his legal and health rights as per Nigerian law.
