In a bold move to curb the spread of spam and combat bot activity, the social media giant formerly known as Twitter, now rebranded as Social Media Platform X, announced on Tuesday its plan to roll out a new subscription model, “Not A Bot.” Under this model, users will be charged a nominal annual fee of $1 for access to basic features.
The “Not A Bot” subscription will encompass essential functionalities such as likes, reposts, quoting other accounts’ posts, and bookmarking posts, specifically on the web version of the platform. This strategic move aims to maintain a healthier online ecosystem, fostering genuine interactions and curbing the proliferation of automated accounts.
Speaking about the initiative, a representative from Social Media Platform X emphasized the varying subscription fees based on exchange rates, tailored to each country’s economic context. This approach seeks to ensure accessibility and affordability for users around the world.
The trial phase of this new subscription model will be initially launched in New Zealand and the Philippines. Existing users need not fret, as the changes will not affect their current usage. However, new users who opt not to subscribe will have limited access, restricted to viewing and reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts.
This development comes in the wake of Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company last year, marking a significant stride in his mission to fortify the platform’s integrity. In July, Social Media Platform X took a proactive step by imposing limits on tweet visibility, aimed at safeguarding the authenticity of its user base.
With the introduction of “Not A Bot,” Social Media Platform X signals its dedication to creating a more secure and authentic online environment for its global user community. The industry will undoubtedly be closely watching the outcomes of this bold endeavor.
