Bankrupt Crypto Exchange FTX Temporarily Halts $500 Million Sale of Anthropic Stake Amidst Bankruptcy Proceedings

FTX’s Sale of $500 Million Stake in AI Startup Anthropic Paused Amid Bankruptcy Proceedings

FTX, the crypto exchange facing bankruptcy, has temporarily halted the sale of its highly sought-after $500 million stake in artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic, as reported by Bloomberg. The investment bank Perella Weinberg, overseeing FTX’s bankruptcy proceedings, informed potential buyers of the pause earlier this month, according to sources familiar with the matter. This development comes after months of thorough due diligence conducted by interested parties on Anthropic, the company behind the popular chatbot Claude, which competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Internal documents obtained by Bloomberg indicate that both FTX and its sister hedge fund, Alameda, had initially invested $500 million in Anthropic. The cryptocurrency exchange’s intention to sell its shares for “hundreds of millions of dollars” was reported by Semafor in early June.

In a significant funding round held in May, Anthropic managed to secure $450 million in Series C funding. The investment was led by Spark Capital, with participation from industry giants such as Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, Zoom Ventures, and others. The successful funding round propelled Anthropic’s valuation to an impressive $4.6 billion, according to a report by Semafor released in early June.

FTX’s decision to pause the sale of its stake in Anthropic suggests a possible reassessment of its assets and strategy amidst the bankruptcy proceedings. The crypto exchange’s financial difficulties have been widely reported, prompting the involvement of Perella Weinberg as the overseeing investment bank.

While the temporary suspension of the sale may cause disappointment among potential buyers, it is also a signal of the inherent value and potential that Anthropic holds within the AI industry. With renowned investors backing the startup and its innovative AI technology, the pause in the sale may present an opportunity for further strategic partnerships or refinements to the sale process.

As the bankruptcy proceedings continue, industry experts and investors eagerly await FTX’s next move regarding its stake in Anthropic. The fate of this significant investment, as well as the potential impact on the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem, remains uncertain.
