Broader Access to AI Education
Tech giant Google has teamed up with UpSkill Universe to relaunch its flagship Hustle Academy programme with a refreshed structure focused on artificial intelligence training.
In a notable development, the initiative is no longer restricted to business owners. The updated version now opens its doors to a wider audience, including students, employees, and job seekers across sub-Saharan Africa. This expansion reflects the rising demand for AI-related skills as industries continue to evolve.
Building on Past Success
Since its introduction in 2022, the Hustle Academy has played a key role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The programme has delivered practical training in business strategy, digital tools, leadership, and innovation.
To date, more than 18,000 SMEs have benefited from the initiative, with many participants reporting improvements in revenue and workforce growth. This success underscores the importance of accessible training in strengthening Africa’s business ecosystem.
SMEs at the Core of Growth
Small businesses remain the backbone of Africa’s economy, contributing over 80 percent of jobs across the continent. With this in mind, the revamped academy aims to empower both individuals and enterprises with relevant, future-focused skills.
By equipping participants with AI knowledge, the programme seeks to enhance productivity, improve competitiveness, and unlock new economic opportunities in both local and global markets.
Flexible and Practical Learning Approach
The 2026 edition introduces a more adaptable learning model designed to meet diverse needs. Participants can engage in short, 60-minute webinars or opt for more immersive bootcamp sessions.
Both formats emphasize hands-on learning, ensuring that participants can immediately apply AI tools in areas such as digital commerce, marketing, and business growth strategy. The focus is on real-world application rather than theory alone.
Bridging the AI Skills Gap
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UpSkill Universe, Gori Yahaya, highlighted the programme’s mission to address the growing AI skills gap in Africa.
He explained that the redesigned academy delivers focused, practical training that participants can quickly translate into results. According to him, artificial intelligence is transforming how businesses succeed and how careers are built across the continent.
Yahaya also noted that the ongoing partnership with Google, now in its fifth year, combines global expertise with deep regional understanding to create meaningful impact.
Preparing Africa for the Future
The expansion of the Hustle Academy reflects a broader effort to prepare Africans for a rapidly changing job market driven by technology. By making AI education more accessible, the initiative aims to develop a new generation of skilled professionals and innovators.
As AI continues to reshape industries worldwide, programmes like this are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring Africa remains competitive while empowering individuals to thrive in the digital age.
