Apple Inc. has announced that John Ternus will become its next Chief Executive Officer, signaling a major transition at the $4 trillion tech giant. The appointment will take effect on September 1, 2026, with Tim Cook stepping aside after more than a decade in the role to assume the position of executive chairman.
According to the company, the decision received full backing from its board of directors and follows a carefully planned succession strategy developed over several years. Cook is expected to remain in charge through the summer months, working closely with Ternus to ensure a seamless handover of leadership.
A Veteran Engineer Steps Forward
Ternus is not new to Apple’s inner workings. He joined the company in 2001 as part of its product design team and has steadily advanced through the ranks. By 2013, he was appointed vice president of Hardware Engineering, and in 2021, he joined the executive leadership team as senior vice president.
Over his 20+ year career at Apple, Ternus has played a central role in the development of nearly all major hardware products. His contributions span across flagship devices including the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, as well as newer categories like the iPad and AirPods.
