French Football Club PSG Gets a Crypto Twist with Sorare

An Ethereum-based fantasy football game has roped in French football giant Paris Saint Germain, popularly known as PSG, as the 100th football club on its in-game choices for players.

PSG Players as Blockchain Cards

Called Sorare, the game is fantasy soccer and card collection game where players buy, sell, trade, and manage a virtual team with digital player cards. The game uses blockchain technology based on Ethereum and was developed in 2018 by Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort.

PSG footballers Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria, and others will be tokenized on the blockchain and released as digital cards on the Sorare game. They can then be purchased, traded, collected, and used by players to form their own unique footballing teams that can compete against other players for prizes.

Ex-PSG stars, like David Beckham and some others, will also be introduced as blockchain cards in the game. They would be given “rare” status, alongside other similar limited-edition cards, which in turn would increase the value of such cards.

Sorare said the partnership will be posted at regular intervals via PSG’s social channels. As per the release, the team is placed sixth in the world across “all sports in terms of social media presence with more than 80 million followers total across platforms.”

Sorare CEO Nicolas Julia told crypto publication Decrypt in a statement:

“Paris Saint-Germain is this year’s Champions League finalist with incredible players in the team such as Neymar and Mbappé. It’s an honor to have them join as the 100th licensed club.”

In addition, Sorare also announced it had officially launched the game in the United States, where football has a growing following alongside popular American sports like baseball and basketball.

Blockchain Games and NFTs Rising in Popularity

Blockchain games and audience representations are not a new offering. Earlier this month as BTCManager reported, Popular British rock band Muse now has its own themed crypto cats on Ethereum-based dApp CryptoKitties, as per a release.

With the move, CryptoKitties users can now collect, trade, and own cats themed on Muse, one of England’s premier rock bands. The band’s label, the Warner Music Group, is one of the many investors on CryptoKitties parent firm Dapper Labs.

The new launch is one in a series of similar themes and crypto cats which include, and are not limited to, the US National Basketball Associate, Dr. Seuss, and the global wrestling league UFC.
